KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Secretary Yogesh Bhattarai has called for resolving the tensions surrounding the construction of a cable car in Pathibhara, Taplejung, through dialogue.
Bhattarai made this appeal at a press conference on Wednesday, in the wake of a clash between the ‘No Cable Car’ group and the police on Magh 2, which left over 24 people injured.
Bhattarai, who is also a member of the House of Representatives from Taplejung, publicly shared his 19-point perspective on the under-construction Pathibhara Devi (Mukumlung) cable car project.
He emphasized that no actions should be taken that would disrupt social harmony or heighten tensions.
“Pathibhara, being geographically remote, should be made easily accessible. There is no doubt that the cable car is a suitable solution for ensuring access for the elderly, children, and disabled individuals,” Bhattarai said.
“It is estimated that up to one million pilgrims and tourists will visit Pathibhara annually, and the cable car will play a significant role in promoting the area’s glory,” he added.
According to him, this will contribute to increased employment, income generation, local product marketing, and overall prosperity for Taplejung.
He further reminded that the Chief District Officer, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Phungling Municipality have all participated in numerous all-party discussions during the cable car’s development.
“Based on the Detailed Project Report (DPR) presented by the construction company, the approved project proposal, and the environmental impact assessment, the operation of the cable car does not appear to undermine any religion, culture, or faith,” he claimed.
“The cable car station will be located approximately 200 meters from the sacred Kanchhi Than and about 800 meters from the main temple of Pathibhara,” Bhattarai added.
Additionally, no hotels or restaurants will be built at the top of Pathibhara, nor will such development be permitted. Contrary to claims, only 2,112 trees and poles will be cut down—there is no truth to the rumor that 25,000 trees will be destroyed, according to him.
