Cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane, who was arrested on rape charges, is appearing in Kathmandu District Court today for an extension.
Lamichhane, who was accused of raping a 17-year-old minor on August 5, was arrested by the police last Thursday (October 20).
As the court was closed due to the Dashain holiday then, he was to appear in the court only today.
The court will set a certain date for the police to investigate the complaint against Lamichhane.
He was arrested immediately after landing at Kathmandu International Airport from Doha, Qatar on Thursday morning. Some police were also criticized for putting Lamichanne in handcuffs.
On August 21, the minor filed a complaint at Gaushala police circle, saying that Sandeep had raped her in a hotel room in Gaushala, Kathmandu. Lamichhane was away to play the Caribbean League cricket.
After receiving a complaint against him, the Nepal Cricket Association (CAN) suspended Lamichhane from the captaincy of Nepal's national cricket team. Also, the International Police Organization (Interpol) issued a diffusion notice at the request of the Nepal Police to arrest him. After being targeted by Interpol, he returned to Kathmandu.
