KATHMANDU: The New Year 1145 of the Nepal Sambat calendar is being commemorated nationwide today with various events.
Members of the Newar community are marking this day as New Year's Day.
The Nepal Sambat is an indigenous calendar unique to Nepal, established by Shankhadhar Sakhwa, who freed the citizens from debt during the reign of Lichchhavi King Raghavdev in 880 AD.
In recognition of Sakhwa's significant contributions to the nation and its people, the government designated him a national luminary on November 18, 1999.
