Nepali cyclist Mangal Lama is set to embark on a solo cycling journey on the Great Himalayan Trail from Taplejung on the eastern border of Nepal from April 1 for the first time.
He will cycle about 1700 km to Humla, the western part of Nepal, within 70 days. He will travel from Kanchenjunga base camp to Hilsa in Humla. To finish his journey, Lama will have to carry his bicycle at times.
A few years ago, a new trekking route called the Great Himalayan Trail connecting the eastern to western parts of Nepal was identified and now Lama aims to make the trail popular for cycling.
He informed NepalNews that he would help to increase the number of tourists by spreading the word about the places. Similarly, Lama wants to get information about climate change and its impact.
Born in Kakani, Nuwakot, Lama was keen on cycling since he was a child. Lama, who grew up following the bicycles of the tourists, later joined a cycling company as a general helper. After working hard over the years, he became a cycling tour guide.
Lama has already traveled on all the open bicycle routes in Nepal. He also cycled for several days from Lhasa in China to Kathmandu. Apart from this, he has participated in various competitions in Singapore, Malaysia, China as well as South Asian and Asian level cycling competitions.
