The number of tourists in the world's third highest peak, Kanchenjunga mountain region is increasing. The Kanchenjunga region, which was deserted last year due to COVID-19, has seen an increase in domestic and international tourists this year.

The Kanchenjunga region, which has had very few visitors for past two years has been bustling with domestic and foreign tourists since last month. According to the office of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Management Council Office, some of the tourists visit the base camp while others only come to enjoy the view from far. According to the check post office, hundreds of domestic tourists from different districts of Nepal have visited the region lately.

About 65 foreign tourists from the United States, France, Germany, Lachia, Britain and India visited the Kanchenjunga area, said Tashitenjing Sherpa, tourism assistant at the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Management Council Office.

Similarly, a team of two American climbers, who had gone to Faktanglung (Kumbhakarna-7710 m) to climb the mountain, returned to Phungling, the district headquarters of Taplejung, after trying for about a month, according to the Ghunsa Check Post Office. According to Yangmak Nupu Sherpa, a local hotel owner from Olangchungola, 11 tourists from Makalau entered Makalu from Olangchungola via Lumbasumba, the border of Taplejung and Sankhuwasabha.

With the increase in tourist activity, the 3,450-meter-high Ghunsa tourist settlement has become crowded with tourists. Similarly, they have started reaching Olangchungola settlement at an altitude of 3,200 meters, said local Tanting Walung. As a result, Ghunsagaun falls in the footpath area of Kanchenjunga Himal and Faktanglung Gaonpalika-7 Olangchungola is the eastern starting point of the Great Himalayan Trail connecting Darchula to the west. Chairman of the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Management Council, Khagendra Fembu Limbu, said that the Great Himalayan Trail (East-West Footpath) has recently become the choice of tourists visiting various touristic locations.

Hotels in the Kanchenjunga area that were closed for a long time have reopened. A hotel, which was built with huge investment, was closed for two years due to non-arrival of tourists. But with the increase in tourist activity since last year, the hotel has started operating in full swing. Hotel owners who were closed due to COVID have become enthusiastic after the arrival of tourists in Kanchenjunga area.
