KATHMANDU: Yomari Punhi, a major festival of the Newar community, is being celebrated nationwide today.
This festival marks the end of the rice harvest season. Members of the Newar community are commemorating the occasion by enjoying a special and tasty treat—Yomari.
Typically observed during the full moon in November or December, this year’s celebration falls on December 15.
Yomari is made from freshly harvested rice flour, filled with chaku (molasses) and sesame seeds, making it both nutritious and warming. It is also seen as a symbol of wealth and prosperity.
From early morning, women in the Newar community are busy preparing yomari. During this time, the Newars also honor the paddy storage with prayers.
On this day, fairs are organized at Dhaneshwor in Kavrepalanchowk, Anantalingeshwor in Bhaktapur, Champadevi in Kathmandu, and in Shikharbesi and Dupcheshwor in Nuwakot.
