KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development has estimated that the country will produce 5.95 million metric tons of rice in the current fiscal year, according to preliminary figures.
Ministry spokesperson Dr. Matina Joshi Baidya stated that the rice yield for this fiscal year is expected to increase by 4.04 percent compared to last fiscal year's production.
"It is estimated that rice, planted during the spring and monsoon seasons, was cultivated on 1.42 million hectares of land this fiscal year. This is a 1.28 percent decrease compared to the total area under rice cultivation last fiscal year," she said.
According to Dr. Joshi Baidya, the average productivity has reached 4.19 metric tonnes per hectare, the highest level recorded to date.
Province-wise, rice yields have increased in the Koshi, Madhes, and Sudurpaschim provinces, while declines were observed in the Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces.
