Ukraine's Chernobyl nuclear plant has been captured by the Russian army. According to the information given by Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to the Ukrainian President's office, the Russian army was able to capture the infamous nuclear plant.
Russian military's presence in the said area in excessive quantity makes it difficult to tell if the plant is fully safe.
"This is Europe's one of the most vulnerable security threats", he added.
The Reuters news agency quoted Russian military sources- Russia had taken control of the plant to send a message that the NATO military alliance should not retaliate.
In 1986, while Ukraine was a part of the Soviet Union, a nuclear accident at the plant caused a great deal of damage to life and property due to radiation.
Decades later, the region was turned into a tourist destination by Ukraine. The plant was closed to tourists just weeks before the Russian invasion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had tweeted before the Russian occupation that the Ukrainian army was fighting with their lives at stake to prevent an accident similar to the one in 1986.
