Chairman of Tribal Commission Ram Bahadur Thapa Magar has said that the United Nations should pay attention to the 'Sickle Cell Anemia' disease seen in the indigenous Tharu community of Nepal.
Addressing the 22nd session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Affairs held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, he said that the Tharu community of Nepal is affected by sickle cell anemia just like the tribal communities of the world are affected and the United Nations Permanent Forum should think about this issue.
Chairman Magar was of the opinion that due to the lack of sufficient resources, he had to face the challenge of putting the rights of the tribal people into practice. He emphasized that tribal knowledge and skills should be protected and promoted, saying that the sustainable development of tribal knowledge system is interconnected.
He said that Nepal is a party to the International Labor Organization and is committed to promoting and protecting the rights of indigenous peoples as declared by the United Nations in accordance with Convention No. 169.
