Kidnapper lands in police net after 14 years in Bara

Police in Bara district on Monday arrested an absconding man accused of kidnapping local businessman and demanding a ransom of Rs 2 million about 14 years ago.

The arrestee has been identified as Birendra Mahato Dhanuk (45) of Khutuwajabdi area in Prasauni Rural Municipality-4 in the district.

A team of security personnel deployed from Bara District Police Office (DPO) arrested Dhanuk on Monday.

A group of 10 persons including Dhanuk had kidnapped Baliram Sah, a grocery store owner, of the same area, then Khutuwajabdi VDC-8, on August 14, 2007. According to police, Sah was kidnapped by the group who threatened to kill him showing the arms while he was about to leave for home after closing the store. The kidnappers then demanded a ransom of Rs 2 million from his family. However, Sah managed to escape from their captivity after a month, on September 16 and lodged a complaint with police implicating Dhanuk who absconded.

Dhanuk will be tried for offences relating to kidnapping or taking hostages as per the Criminal (Code) Act, 2074 (2017). As per Section 211 or 212 of the Act, the guilty shall be liable to a sentence of imprisonment for a term of seven to ten years and a fine of Rs 75,000 to 100,000.
