Bagmati Province Assembly member Narottam Baidhya has apologised for giving his controversial statement against the Prime Minister and taken it back.

At the very beginning of today’s session of the Province Assembly, Baidhya demanded time from the Speaker and explained that his statement came out of emotion.

Taking part in the deliberations on policies and programmes for the fiscal year 2078/ 79 (2021-22) on Friday, Baidhya said that Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi, was needed to control the arbitrary acts of the Prime Minister and he was ready to become Godse if necessary. The statement sparked controversy from all quarters and he withdrew his statement as per the direction of the Nepali Congress (NC).

Earlier, Nepali Congress, the political party the leader is associated with, instructed him to withdraw the statement.

“I am directed to take back the statement I gave standing in the rostrum of the Assembly targeting the Prime Minister by my parliamentary that terms the statement offensive and against the parliamentary dignity and I hereby take it back,’’ he said, adding that he realised the statement was against the diplomatic and parliamentary dignity.

Expressing his determination to move ahead by internalising the Constitution of Nepal, the republican system and parliamentary dignity, he said he takes back his statement which he made out of frustration and apologises to all Nepalis.

The Nepali Congress Bagmati Province Parliamentary Party had instructed Baidhya to make a self-criticism of and take back his statement that he made in the meeting of the Province Assembly on Friday.

Various political parties, intellectuals as well as members of the general public had condemned the statement made by Baidhya and urged him to take it back.

Speaker Sanu Kumar Shrestha directed the statement removed from the record after Baidya took back the statement with self-realisation and requested it to be removed from the Assembly's record.
