Context Republic Day: Leaders see bright future for republic

Leaders from major political parties viewed that the future of Federal Democratic Republic Nepal was bright provided the political leaders from the major political parties come on board on the common agendas in the national interest, ironing out the differences.

In the queries put by the Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) in the context of the Republic Day that falls on May 29, they opined that the future of all Nepalis was bright if they put an end to partisan interests and rise above the blame-game and work in unison for prosperity of the country.

CPN (Maoist Centre)'s Mahendra Bahadur Shahi urged all the political parties in the country to create a common concept for further strengthening republican system achieved after a huge sacrifices and struggle.

He also called upon all the political parties to join the grand campaign of nation-building. He admitted that it was challenging for the government to instantly fulfill the aspirations of the public about development, good-governance with social justice and economical growth given the limited resources.

Stating that since the federal democratic republican system was still in the implementation phase, putting in place legal and structural reforms was the topmost priority for the government at this phase.

According to him, the need of the hour was the stable government. He observed that it was difficult to attain political stability due to the mixed mandate given by the people. Hence, he argued that the people should given a clear mandate to a particular force to govern for five year.

Rastriya Swatantra Party's Santosh Pariyar opined that instead of blaming the system, we should understand the situation as the as a case of the leadership failing to understand the sentiments of the people and society.

"There have been many struggles and sacrifices for democracy. Republican system was its achievement. The voices against democracy do not make any sense at the moment," he said.

Nepali Congress parliamentary party chief whip Ramesh Lekhak said that he was confident that the President should stay within the ambit of the constitution since, he added, that the country adopted the federal democratic republic system and the constitution mandates that the President should function within the constitutional boundaries.

Stating that the Presidential post-the highest in the country- was mired in the controversy in the, he said that the political parties should be aware and responsible making sure that such incidents do not recur in coming days.

According to Badri Prasad Pandey, Nepali Congress deputy general-secretary commented that three-tier elections were conducted twice and there was success regarding institutionalization of the federal democratic republic system since its adaptation in 2008.

He said that republic system was not only about electing the Head of the Government, ministers and Chief Ministers, the 7.6 million households in the country should also feel the presence of republican system and they should be benefited.

He stressed on devising legal and structural mechanism and make public service delivery efficient and swift for the relevance of the republican system.

CPN (UML) politburo member Gokul Prasad Banskota said that since the federal democratic republic was being implemented for over 15 years, not much weakness was seen in laws but there were so many challenges in its management.

He stressed on deep contemplation to make federalism effective. Furthermore, he called for reforms in electoral system, public service delivery, development and administration sector.

Janamat Party Chairperson Chandrakanta Raut remarked that the republican system was a matter of pride for the Nepal and Nepalis. "Earlier, it was unimaginable for the offspring of general public to hold the highest post in the country. Republican system has made it possible."

According to him, the practice of republican system was moving towards positive direction."Electing the Head of the State from Madheshi community for the first time and women for the second time by going by the principle of inclusiveness was one of the high points of the republican system," he said.

He pointed out the need to bring about good changes in the tendency of protesting for the sake of protest without any rhyme and reason. "Again, enabling an environment where one could speak up and speak against is also one of the good results of the republican system."
