Discrimination against women would be ended: Minister Regmi

Minister for Women, Children, and senior Citizens Uma Regmi has said the government is committed to ending all forms of violence and discrimination against women.

Inaugurating the 27th Annual Meeting and the Fifth Convention of the Women for Human Rights, Single Women Group today, she said the government would launch a nationwide campaign for ending all types of violence against women including femicide, rape, and domestic violence.

Minister Regmi stressed that the women themselves should be active for their equal participation in all the bodies of the State, adding that she would make initiatives from her side to bring the women into the leadership role in all sectors. She urged for giving suggestions for legislating women-friendly laws and amending the existing laws as well as policies for protecting their rights.

National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chair Tapa Bahadur Magar said the topic of single women has been included in the six-year strategy prepared by NHRC. He said the NHRC will work for the protection of the rights of single women.

Budhanilkantha Municipality mayor Uddhav Prasad Kharel said his municipality has been working actively for the rights of single women.

The convention will elect the Group's new leadership. Two hundred and fifty single women from more than 70 districts are attending the convention.

The Group was established in 2052 BS and it has been working for the empowerment, leadership development, and social justice of single women.
