The hearings on the writ petitions filed against the dissolution of the House of Representatives (HoR) by the constitutional bench of the Supreme Court are continuing today too. Today, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s personal lawyers will close their arguments.
Of the 15 hours allotted by the court to advocates for the defendant of the writ petitions, seven hours had been allocated for PM Oli’s personal lawyers to place their arguments. The prime minister’s lawyers now have one-and-a-half hours left to close their arguments.
After PM Oli’s lawyers complete their arguments the lawyers of the Speaker of the House will start placing their arguments. Then the lawyers for the writ petitioners will place their arguments in response to the arguments made by the advocates from the defendant side.
The constitutional bench will then hear the arguments of the amicus curiae.
The hearings on the case are being held before a constitutional bench led by Chief Justice Cholendra Shamsher JB Rana and comprising justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Mira Khadka, Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada and Dr Ananda Mohan Bhattarai.
Thirty writs were filed against the dissolution of the House of Representatives. On May 22, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had, on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, dissolved the House of Representatives and fixed November 12 and 19 as the date for the mid-term election.
