A two-day painting workshop has begun at Nepal Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) with an objective of mainstreaming the rights of gender and sexual minorities of Dalit communities in the country.

Samari Utthan Sewa had organised the workshop with collaboration of NAFA Department of Handicrafts and Department of Contemporary Art.

On the occasion, NAFA Chancellor Naradmani Hartamchhali said, "Dalit communities have wanted special transformation. The workshop will definitely reflect such types of vibes. It is hoped the workshop will spread awareness. A space for equality should be created through art which is a strong and effective medium."

Expressing happiness over organising such a programme by NAFA, former Ambassador Padam Sundas pointed out that the workshop would incorporate sentiments of Dalits. He hoped the artists would make paintings as per sentiments.

Similarly, NAFA Vice-Chancellor Lalkaji Lama stressed that the art should speak about the social discrimination addressing human nature and caste system and its impacts on society.

Council member of NAFA, Aruna Hingmang, shared that Dalit and transgender communities are also the part of the society, so they deserve equal treatment.

The workshop, organised to give space for the voice of such communities, would be effective.

Presenting the bitter truth she experienced while working at different organisations, Chairperson of Samari Utthan Sewa, Bimala Gayak, said she was happy to get a chance to carry out important works together with NAFA.

A total of 25 artists have participated in the workshop which is concluding today.
