The Election Commission has issued a statement saying that it has come to its notice that some people had been issuing press statements seeking votes for their candidates.

Apparently, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is also the chairperson of CPN UML, had this morning released a statement seeking support for party candidate Ram Bahadur Thapa for the National Assembly election. It has to be noted that the election is scheduled for Thursday (May 20) and today is the electoral silence period.

The commission has also mentioned that it has noticed that some media houses had been publishing opinion pieces about who would win or lose the election despite the commission having requested all to refrain from doing so. It has also stated that some media houses had also been conducting interviews that are related to the election.

The Election Commission has also said that when the code of conduct that needs to be followed before any election is not adhered to by any political party, government office or media house then it directly affects the transparency of and trust towards elections.

It has stated that some concerned people were on one hand stating that the Election Commission was not being able to uphold the code of conduct during the election but were themselves involved in breaking that code which is not acceptable. The commission has also mentioned that it can initiate legal action against any individual or organisation that breaks this code of conduct and is keeping in record the names of such persons and organisations.
