Police start search for TIA bomb threat caller

This morning, after an unidentified person repeatedly called to say that a suspicious object (bomb) had been placed at the domestic terminal of the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the passengers were evacuated and search operation began.

The airport was reopened at 11:10 a.m. after the suspicious item was not found.

There were two phone calls at the airport between 9 and 10 o'clock. A man's voice was heard on the phone. He said five or six bombs had been planted and would explode in two hours.

The Tribhuvan International Airport Security Police Office then evacuated all the passengers.

Acting Chief of the Metropolitan Police Office, Ranipokhari, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Uttam Subedi said that the call may have come from within Nepal.

Ranipokhari has already mobilized a team to investigate the incident. Police are searching for the caller.

Airport spokesman Teknath Sitaula said there had been two phone calls at the airport. According to him, the caller had called twice between 9 and 10 o'clock.

The police and the Nepal Army had been informed after receiving a call from an unknown person.

A bomb disposal team was deployed after the news came from the airport. A spokesperson of the Nepal Army, Assistant Rathi Narayan Silwal, informed that a team including trained dogs has been deployed from the army.

"Our team was called in after receiving information that a bomb had been planted. The disposal team was put on standby and searched by a team with trained dogs," he said, "but so far nothing like that has been found. The rest of the area is also being monitored.

The airport has been reopened after no suspicious items were found.
