Popular tigress dies in Pench National Park, India

Tigress, popularly known as 'Kalarwali', has died in Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh, India. She gave birth to 29 cubs and was also known as 'Super Mum'.

The 17-year-old woman had been ill for three or four days and died in Pench National Park last Saturday, according to the Madhya Pradesh-based Forest Department.

Forest Minister Dr Kunwar Vijay Shah has said that irreparable damage has been caused by the death of Kalarwali.


He wrote on Twitter, "The queen who played an important role in giving Madhya Pradesh the status of Tiger State is no more. I pay tribute to the mother of 29 Damruki Super Tigers in the state. Today, our province is gaining a reputation as a tiger state due to her contribution."

Born in 2005 in Pench National Park. According to Indian media, the tigress became a mother for the first time in 2008, and gave birth to five babies at a time which is considered rare.
