Masks are utilized to transform identity in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. A masked, sacred monastery dance evolved in this culture (called Cham lama dance) is a dance performed by monks and nuns in the central courtyard of a monastery to the beat of bone trumpets, copper horns, cymbals, and chants. Past Buddhist instructors and saints, wrathful deities, animal deities such as deer, devils, skeletons, and other figures are represented by the masked actors. They spin around in an allegorical dance about Buddhism's victory over negative forces and demons.
