India's daily new COVID-19 cases, deaths hit new highs

India witnessed spikes both in daily confirmed COVID-19 cases and new deaths on Saturday, as 346,786 more infections and 2,624 deaths were reported, the government health ministry said.

Both figures are at historical high in the country.

The total tally reached 16,610,481 and the death toll increased to 189,544.

This is also the third consecutive day when over 300,000 cases were registered in a single day in the country.

There are 2,552,940 active cases in the country, with an increase of 124,324 through Friday, as 13,867,997 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals across the country.

The daily figures continue to peak in the country, and the government has imposed new measures to contain the spread. Some school exams have been canceled or postponed in the wake of the deteriorating situation.

India kicked off a nationwide vaccination drive in January, and so far over 138 million vaccination doses have been administered across the country.

Meanwhile, the government has ramped up testing facilities across the country, as 276,199,222 tests were conducted in India till Friday, out of which 1,753,569 tests were conducted on Friday alone, said the latest data issued by the Indian Council of Medical Research on Saturday.

The national capital Delhi, one of the most affected places in the country, witnessed 24,331 new cases and 348 deaths through Friday.

So far 13,541 people have died in the city due to COVID-19, said Delhi's health department.

Delhi has been put under a weeklong lockdown till April 26.
