KATHMANDU: Canada’s recent Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) policy changes that began on November 1 this year is likely to impact Nepalese students planning their academic and professional futures in Canada.

New Directions for Canada’s PGWP Program Canada’s PGWP has been a significant draw for international students, providing graduates with valuable work experience, according to ApplyBoard, an international student mobility platform.

However, new restrictions on eligibility—particularly for college and non-degree graduates—mean Nepalese students may need to consider alternative ways to make the most of their time in Canada, it said.

Nepalese students are increasingly focused on areas such as health sciences, engineering, and technology, which align with Canada’s demand for healthcare and skilled professionals.

Recent ApplyBoard data shows that 13 percent of Nepalese students are exploring health-related fields, with engineering and technology searches ranking as the second most popular at 22 percent.

Additionally, sciences have become highly sought after, representing 20 percent of all searches by Nepalese students, it added.

With the new PGWP restrictions, interest in business studies may see a decline, as PGWP eligibility for some business and management programs will be limited, according to the platform.

This shift is already noticeable as more Nepalese students are gravitating toward fields with stronger job market potential in Canada.
