208 people killed in monsoon-induced disasters

The death toll from monsoon-induced disasters in the country has reached 208. The Nepal Police confirmed such number of fatalities since June 10 to Sunday afternoon.

Three people died in Kathmandu Valley, 29 in Koshi Province, eight in Madhesh Province and 45 in Bagmati Province, said police.

Likewise, Gandaki Province recorded 56 fatalities, Lumbini Province 37 fatalities, Karnali Province 14 and Sudurpaschim Province 16, shared DIG and Spokesperson of Nepal Police Dan Bahadur Karki.

DIG Karki further reported 271 people sustained injuries in landslides and floods during this period. Among them, 11 were injured in the Kathmandu Valley alone, while 42 in Koshi Province, 12 in Madhesh Province, 31 in Bagmati Province.

Also, 47 injured were reported from Gandaki Province, 25 from Lumbini Province, 67 from Karnali Province and 36 from Sudurpaschim Province.

The rescue operations carried out by security agencies saved lives of 215 vulnerable individuals from various places since the onset of the monsoon this year.

However, 153 were still missing and search operations are ongoing, added DIG Karki.

The disasters caused inundation and damaged several infrastructures including 365 houses, 126 cowsheds, 52 bridges, six schools and two government office buildings, according to the police.

Meanwhile, 972 livestock were lost to the floods and landslides. The disasters displaced 6,049 households over the past two months, police said.
