It has been 21 years since the royal palace murder massacre. 10 members of the royal family, including the then King Birendra, were killed on the night of June 1, 2001.
After that, a high level investigation committee was formed under the leadership of the then Chief Justice Keshab Prasad Upadhyaya who found the then Prince Dipendra guilty.
Significant political changes took place in Nepal after the royal palace massacre bringing the 240-year-long Shah dynasty to an end.
King Birendra's reign lasted for 40 years and after the restoration of the multi-party system in 1990, he agreed to become the constitutional king. Despite the non-partisan panchayat system of the time, King Birendra made every effort for the development of Nepal during his reign.
The royal family palace, where the king's family lived for hundreds of years, is now a museum making it easier for people to visit the palace. However, people are yet to see the Republic Monument. Similarly, the government also uses the building as an office of the Passport Department.
Apart from the report of the high-level inquiry committee formed after the incident, no government has so far found out the real reason behind the tragic incident.
