CFN, passengers concerned about transport fare increment

The Consumers’ Forum Nepal (CFN) and passengers have expressed their concern about increment in public vehicle fare by the Bagmati provincial government.

The Forum central member Roshan Pokharel has demanded the withdrawal of a public vehicle fare hike, stating that the price increment has hit passengers during the Dashain festival.

Passengers have complained about the increment in public transport fare. They have termed the government’s move unscientific. Shyam Maharjan of Lalitpur Metropolitan City has accused the government of hitting passengers at a time when festivals are around the corner by increasing public transport fares.

Similarly, a commuter Indra Maya Tamang demanded a scrap of the government’s move.

The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure Development of the provincial government has increased public transport fares within the province including the Kathmandu Valley. This will come into effect from October 18.

According to the public transport fare adjustment set by the Ministry of Physical Infrastructures Development of the province, travel by public bus up to 5 km distance is charged Rs 18 each. The decision however comes into effect from October 18.

Similarly, travel up to 10 km is priced Rs 23 each, up to 27 km Rs 27, up to 20 km Rs 30, and over 20 km Rs 35. A passenger can carry belongings weighing up to 15 kg on a public bus for free. Carrying more than 10 kg belongings is charged Rs 5.

The government has hiked public transport fares within the province except for the Kathmandu Valley by 23 per cent.
