It has been three years now since the rape and murder of Nirmala Pant. The body of the 13-year-old was retrieved from a sugarcane farm and after a medical test, it was confirmed that she had been raped before being killed.
She had gone missing when she was on her way home from her friend’s house after doing her school homework. But justice has not been delivered for the victim till date.
Meanwhile, Nirmala's father, locals and rights activists today took out a rally at Mahendranagar Bazar, demanding justice for the victim. Today marks the third year of the gruesome incident which still has not been solved by the police.
A team of the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police led by a deputy superintendent of police has been investing the case for the past three years. The investigation squad is stationed in Kanchanpur. Moreover, separate teams have been mobilised from the district and province levels to investigate the case.
After four weeks of the incident, one Dilip Singh Bista of Bagphanta of Bhimdutta Municipality-11 was made public by the police as an accused in the crime. After police arrested Bista, who is medically a mentally challenged patient, it sparked a public outrage and he was later released by the attorney’s office. Moreover, his DNA also did not match with the related evidences.
During the public protest then, Sani Khuna from Salghari of Bhimdutta Municipality-18 lost his life. Though the case is in the priority list of Sudurpaschim Police and District Police Administration, it still remains unsolved.
DSP Siddharaj Neupane, Spokesperson of the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, said that three teams from the central to the district level are looking into the case. "Police are responsible for bringing the guilty under the ambit of law and justice to the victim will not be denied," he stated.
