Human trafficking, a disgrace to civilized society: PM

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that human trafficking is a disgrace to a civilized society. Human trafficking is a crime against humanity that also tarnishes the country's image on an international level, he said while appealing to all to join the campaign against human trafficking.

At a program on 'My party's commitment against human trafficking' organized by Maiti Nepal here Thursday, Prime Minister Deuba said that the government was committed to fulfilling the commitments made by the country at the national and international forum in the fight against human trafficking and transportation.

Noting that the Constitution of Nepal guarantees the right against any kind of exploitation as a fundamental right, he said that despite this, innocent girls are being trafficked for various reasons and pretexts. "In order to effectively solve the problem of child trafficking, it is necessary for the government, non-governmental sector, social organizations, and human rights workers to work together in a coordinated manner," Prime Minister Deuba said.

He also emphasized that all three levels of government, from the center to the provincial and local levels, need to work in coordination with each other to make the campaign against human trafficking effective. He said that the government is committed to amending existing laws and formulating new laws related to human trafficking to make them more effective in view of the changing nature of the crime.

Lauding the work done by Maiti Nepal against human trafficking, he appreciated the efforts made by non-governmental organizations like Maiti Nepal to raise public awareness against this heinous crime.

Prime Minister Deuba, who is also the President of the Nepali Congress, said that his party and the Government of Nepal are fully committed against human trafficking. He assured to provide all necessary support from the government and the party to control the menace.

At the program, CPN (Maoist Center), CPN (Unified Socialist), Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, Democratic Socialist Party, Nepal Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janamorcha, Nepal Workers and Peasants Party, Rashtriya Prajatantra Party, Representatives and MPs of various parties including attended the program and expressed their commitments to work against human trafficking.
