The Kathmandu Metropolitan City has banned consumption of tobacco products at public places within the metropolis since September 17, but the decree has not been fully abided by the general public.

The metropolis had issued a public notice stating that a fine of Rs 100 would be imposed if anyone was found consuming tobacco products at public places with effect from September 17.

One can find people consuming the tobacco products openly at Ratna Park, New Road, Asan, Sundhara and such places where there is crowding.

Sunil Lamsal, a member of KMC mayor Balendra Shah's secretariat, said the metropolis police have been carrying out regular monitoring to enforce the edict and those flouting the rule will face action any time.

It is said those breaching the rule will face action and an imposed fine on the basis of the Tobacco Products Control and Regulation Act, 2068 BS.

It may be recalled here that the 11th general assembly of the KMC Municipal Council has already endorsed the policy of enforcing in an effective manner the ban on consumption of tobacco products and smoking at public places.
