The special session of the Lumbini Province Assembly that started on Wednesday ended after Chief Minister Shankar Pokhrel submitted his resignation from the post. The session had started at 1:00 pm.
Earlier, Nepali Congress Parliamentary Party leader Birendra Prasad Kanaudiya registered a no-confidence motion against Pokharel. The motion was supported by the Province Assembly members Sahasram Yadav, Tara GC and Krishna Dhoj Khadka.
Speaker Purna Bahadur Gharti announced the closure of the special session after he read out the resignation registered by CM Pokhrel shortly following the resumption of the one-hour postponed meeting. The government led by Pokharel has been toppled after it failed to secure a majority. The opposition coalition party has a majority with 41 Province Assembly members.
Meanwhile, the CPN (Maoist Centre) has proposed its parliamentary party leader Kul Prasad KC for the new CM.
