National census from tomorrow; All preparations completed

The main census of the 12th series of the national census, which is conducted every 10 years, will start tomorrow, November 11. The census will continue till November 25 and all preparations have been completed for it as informed by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) today.

The houses and households have already been listed in the first phase of the census. It was informed about 40,000 enumerators and 8,500 supervisors are being mobilized to collect the details of all within 15 days.

Nabin Lal Shrestha, director general of the department, said that various census coordination and facilitation committees have been formed from the center to the ward level to make the census successful. According to him, 87 district census offices, and 349 local census offices have been set up in seven states to conduct the census.

There are 80 questionnaires in the census form which takes an average of 20 minutes for a family to fill out. In this process, information on basic of economic, social service, facilities, infrastructure and disaster situation will be collected from all wards across the country and community questionnaire will be filled and real information of the entire ward can be obtained from it, said Director General Shrestha.

He added that census was being taken in Kalapani, Lipulek and Limpiyadhura areas through diplomatic channels through Ministry of External Affairs. In this census, details will be collected from tablets using digital copy method in six municipalities of Kathmandu district and paper questionnaires will be used in other places across the country.

He informed that this time the details of Nepali employees and dependents are being collected from the website application by adopting e-censorship method in Nepali diplomatic missions abroad. According to Director General Shrestha, based on the household listing, it is estimated that the population of Nepal will not reach 30 million in this census.

It is said that the preliminary report of the census will be brought within three months and it will take two years for the complete details to come. Dr Ram Kumar Phuyal, Member of National Planning Commission, said that the census conducted every ten years could provide basic date on the population at national and local level. It also provides information on social, demographic and economic indicators related to periodic development goals and evaluating sustainable development goals.
