The government has prioritised expansion of the East-West Highway and construction of roads and tunnel roads in the budget presented for next fiscal year 2078-79.
Budget amounting Rs 163.3 billion for the next fiscal has been set aside for the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport. “Arrangements have been made for classification of roads after their GIS mapping,” said Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Poudel while reading out the budget. The East-West Highway will be expanded into four lanes and expansion of the road sections of Kanchanpur-Kamala, Kamala-Dhalkebar-Pathalaiya and Narayangadh-Butwal will be expedited.
Construction of the Kakadvitta-Inaruwa, Pathalaiya-Narayanghat, Butwal-Kohalpur and Kohalpur-Banbasa road sections will also begin.
Likewise, Rs 15.34 billion has been allotted to construct service lanes, underpass and overpass and tunnel roads and tunnels for animals along the highways.
Also, Rs 8.13 billion has been set aside for the expansion of the Pushpa Lal Highway and Rs 3.20 billion for the construction of the road sections under the Madan Bhandari Highway.
