The Supreme Court has ruled to stop the construction of an international airport in Nijgadh from an environmental point of view. A full bench of Justices Harikrishna Karki, Vishwambhar Prasad Shrestha, Ishwar Prasad Khatiwada, Prakash Man Singh Raut and Dr Manoj Kumar Sharma today issued a writ in a dispute over the construction of the airport.

During the construction of the airport, a dispute had started over the issue of cutting down trees. Former Secretary Dwarikanath Dhungel, Ranjuhjur Pandey Chhetri, Vijay Kumar Singh Danuwar, Pankaj Kumar Karna and Senior Advocate Krishna Prasad Bhandari had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court on December 3, 2019.

In the writ petition, a single bench of Justice Tanka Bahadur Moktan had issued an interim order to stop the construction work on December 6, 2019. The writ petition demanded to stop the construction of Nijgadh Airport as it would destroy the old forest.

The opposition was asked to submit a written reply in the name of the government, continuing the interim order not to proceed with the work of the airport. After hearing all the parties, the court today ruled to stop the construction work of the airport.
