Borussia Dortmund came from behind after goals from Emre Can, Donyell Malen and Erling Haaland and overpowered hosts Wolfsburg 3-1 at the 13th round of Bundesliga on Saturday.

Both sides staged a lively opening period as Dortmund's Marco Reus tested Wolfsburg keeper Pavao Pervan with two minutes played before Wout Weghorst opened the scoring with his chest from close range moments later.

The early opener played into Wolfsburg's cards as the hosts kept all their men behind the ball to lurk for counterattacks whereas the "BVB" dominated possession.

Mahmoud Dahoud kept Wolfsburg's defence busy as the German international unleashed two dangerous long-range efforts on target.

The visitors got rewarded for their offensive actions and levelled the scores just before the break as Can made no mistake and converted a foul play penalty in the 35th minute.

Dortmund remained in control of the proceedings and should have taken the lead with three minutes into the second half but for all that the left post denied Nico Schulz an away goal.

Wolfsburg remained passive but showed a sign of life with 53 minutes played when Aster Vranckx' hammer forced Dortmund custodian Gregor Kobel to make a diving save.

Marco Rose's team continued dominant and completed its comeback it the 56th minute after Reus' square pass allowed Malen to beat Pervan from 18 meters into the top left corner.

The "Wolves" suddenly sparked to life and forced Dortmund onto the back foot as John Anthony Brooks headed narrowly over the goal before Kobel neutralized Dodi Lukebakio's promising shot from tight angle.

Wolfsburg gained the upper hand, but substitute Erling Haaland showed no mercy and killed the game after volleying home Julian Brandt's cross to make it 3-1 on the scoreboards in the 81st minute.

With the result, runner up Dortmund move atop the standings for now meanwhile Wolfsburg slip to the 7th position.

"It was a deserved win with a difficult start but my team's reaction to the early setback was great. Definitely the best performance of the season so far. Erling Haaland can always make the difference," Dortmund head coach Rose said.

Elsewhere, newly promoted Bochum bounced back and stunned third placed Freiburg 2-1.

Relentless Ihlas Bebou provided a hattrick helping Hoffenheim to see off resilient Greuther Furth 6-3.

Cologne snatched a 4-1 win over rivals Borussia Monchengladbach in the Rhine derby and Augsburg shocked Hertha Berlin with a late 1-1 equalizer.
