The northern Japanese city of Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture, has decided to give up its bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics.

A small group of protesters gathered Sunday in central Tokyo and in the northern city of Sapporo to oppose Japan’s overtures to hold the 2030 Winter Olympics.

Japan’s northern city of Sapporo on Monday rejected holding a referendum to give voters a choice over bidding for the 2030 Winter Olympics.
