Many factories shut down due to the global pandemic for the last two years causing a global shortage of different products. Materials to create semiconductor chips used in most electronic devices, four wheelers and other appliances are unavailable.

Due to this global shortage of said chips has caused issues in manufacturing of cars causing a scarcity of it.

And as the festivals are right around the corner, how are the car dealerships handling the situation?

The festivals Dashain, Tihar and Chhat are the peak time of vehicle sales but due to the global shortage, things are not the same as last year.

The customers have to wait for at least 8 weeks or more for their vehicles to arrive after booking.

However, despite the setback business is running smoothly for the car dealers. Different dealers have different offers at the present for the festivals from cash back to gift hampers.

“Pandemic has pushed more people to buy their own personal vehicles. They prefer to have a personal car rather than travel in public. Right now, customers have to wait 8 weeks to actually get their vehicle but since the lockdown is finally lifted in most of the parts of the world, hopefully we will get to lift the waiting period after some time,” says Mahendra Shrestha, senior manager of Toyota.

“It is not a new thing for the sales to go up during the festivities but this year it is more because people are concerned about their health,” he adds.

“And thankfully now that everything is running smoothly, the production of the said chip will also increase. It was due to the lockdown things were at halt.”, says Pankaj Yadav, Marketing and Communications Manager of Ford.

At present, it is not just the four wheelers but almost all electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers, televisions rely on computer chips to function.

The latest technology requires these chips to function.

However the demand for it is not being met. This has created a serious shortage of cars worldwide. Ford, Hyundai, Toyota are some of the many manufacturers who are struggling to produce vehicles at the moment.

While businesses for car dealerships did not come to a halt even during the lockdowns, delivering the vehicles was an issue they faced for some time.

And since Nepal had a pass system, they said it helped them a lot for delivering the vehicles as well.
