The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Office has started providing free ambulance service from five various locations within the city. According to KMC, the free ambulance service has been started so that people are able to reach the hospital on time and do not have to lose their lives due to delay in getting medical service.

The office has emphasised that this service from the five locations is for free.

The five locations from where the free ambulance service will be available are Rastriya Sabha Griha, Exhibition Road; Trolley Bus Park, Minbhawan; premises of Ward No. 3 in Maharajgunj; premises of Ward No. 15 in Swayambhu; and premises of Ward No. 7 in Chabahil.

KMC has mentioned that the free ambulance service is for patients with ailments not related to the coronavirus. People who have been infected with COVID-19 can contact Nepal Ambulance Service at 102 to avail free ambulance service. This service is also being operated in coordination with KMC.

Bidhya Sundar Shakya, Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, informed that the free ambulance service had been started to help sick people reach the hospital on time as vehicular movement has been curtailed due to the prohibitory order.

As per KMC, people can avail the free ambulance service to either go to the hospital from their home or vice-versa or from one hospital to another. This service is also available for people who live within two kilometres outside the geographical boundary of Kathmandu. However, the service will be available beyond the designated area for cancer patients or those who require dialysis treatment.

The KMC Office has mentioned that it has signed an agreement with the Joint Ambulance Drivers Association-Nepal to operate the service. As per the agreement, KMC will pay a sum of Rs 121,000 for each ambulance for a duration of 15 days. Similarly, the association has to make available the said number of ambulances along with the driver for 15 days.

To avail the free ambulance service people need to call the hotline number 1180 or can contact the respective ambulance driver.
