KATHMANDU: In a twist that caught everyone off guard, U.S.-based actress Arunima has returned to Nepal not just to promote her film “Ghar: But in America”, but to file for divorce from her husband, Yuvraj Shrestha. As the limelight was on her film, the actual drama unfolded behind the scenes.

Since Arunima has obtained American citizenship now, she cannot directly file for divorce in Nepal, so she went ahead through a legal representative. In a bold move, she blamed it all on Yuvraj—a local Congress leader from Sunsari—accusing him of having cheated her before marriage. She claims he had lied about several personal matters that only came to light after the wedding.

Their relationship sparked suddenly last August during her vacation in Nepal. A marriage proposal from Yuvraj was brought through relatives, and after spending just a few days together, the two tied the knot in a traditional ceremony at Ram Mandir, Kathmandu on August 20. But just days later, Arunima flew back to the U.S. without ever stepping into her husband’s home as a daughter-in-law.

According to Arunima, she had plans to take Yuvraj to the U.S. with her, and he was fully on board. However, once she returned, she began hearing disturbing things about him. “Before the marriage, everything about him sounded great. After the wedding, it was all lies and disappointment. He never admitted to anything. I’d rather stay single than live with someone so dishonest,” she revealed in an emotional interview.

She said they’ve not spoken for months, and despite her being in Nepal now, she hasn’t met him. While Yuvraj is reportedly against the divorce, Arunima seems completely firm on her decision.

As per Nepali law, both parties must consent for an immediate divorce. However, if one party disagrees, the divorce can still be finalized after a year of the case being filed. If Yuvraj agrees and signs, the process could end sooner.
This isn’t Arunima’s first heartbreak. She was previously married to Amit Aryal, with whom she shares a daughter. The couple had moved to the U.S. but later separated, and Amit eventually remarried.
