Hearing on writ against citizenship ordinance to continue on June 10

The hearing on the writ petition against the Nepali Citizenship (First Amendment) ordinance at the Supreme Court could not be completed today. The hearing on the writ will continue on June 10.

Senior advocate Borna Bahadur Karki and advocates Bishnu Kumari Giri, Ram Bahadur Shahi, Kul Bahadur Bogati, Bir Bhadra Joshi, along with deputy secretary general of Maulik Jarokilo Party Laxman Pokharel had filed a writ petition against the ordinance. The Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of President are the defendants to the writ.

A constitutional bench headed by Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JB Rana was formed to hear the writ. The other members of the bench are Justices Deepak Kumar Karki, Meera Khadka, Hari Krishna Karki, and Ishwor Prasad Khatiwada.

President Bidhya Devi Bhandari had issued the ordinance to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act as per Article 114 (1) of the Constitution of Nepal on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers on May 23.
