A landslide in Khayarmara, Ward No. 10 of Bardibas Municipality in the northern part of Mahottari district, has affected 200 families, said Isara Lama. Even though there were minor landslides till midnight, larger landslides fell from 2 am today and now till noon, causing panic among 200 residents of the area.

According to the locals, the main markets of Chopke, Pipaldama, Gurungkhola, Chanaute, Gardikhola, Bhangre Jhaure and Khayarmara are at risk after the landslide from Tintale flooded the river. Due to the lack of road network in the inner settlement of Khayarmara, the locals have been moving from the river to Bardibas.

Locals, who have been affected by the unseasonal landslide three to four months before the onset of the rainy season, are worried about the possibility of additional landslides after the onset of the rainy season.

Nagdev Yadav of Bardibas, who has been working in the field of environment, said that the landslide occurred due to the sudden rise in temperature in the Terai over the past one year. He also pointed out that settlements in the area were at risk as more landslides could occur.
