Nepal sees highest number of COVID deaths at 246 on Wednesday

8,064 new cases take nationwide tally to 480,418; death toll reaches 5,657

Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) Wednesday reported 8,065 new cases of coronavirus infection. With this, the COVID count has reached 480,418. Additionally, 109 persons have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the antigen test.

Likewise, the Health Ministry has also recorded 246 deaths from COVID-19, the highest daily numbers. As of Wednesday, the nationwide death toll from COVID-19 has reached 5,657. Presently, there are 114,358 active cases in Nepal.

Meanwhile, the three districts of Kathmandu valley have recorded 2,486 cases in the past 24 hours. Kathmandu registered 1,988 cases, Lalitpur 270 cases and Bhaktapur registered 228 cases, as per the data released by the MoHP.

Likewise, 67 persons succumbed to COVID-19 in the valley — 39 persons in Kathmandu, 11 in Lalitpur and another 17 in Bhaktapur — in 24 hours.

As many as 7,989 patients of COVID-19 have recovered in the past 24 hours. As of Wednesday, a total of 360,403 people have recovered from the viral disease, the data released by the MoHP showed. Presently, the recovery rate stands at 75 per cent.

Earlier, the MoHP on Tuesday had reported 8,136 cases of coronavirus infection that had taken the nationwide tally to 472,354.

As of Wednesday, a total of 2,834,098 persons have undergone the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test. Presently, there are 114,358 persons staying in isolation while 854 others have been placed in quarantine in the country.

More than 164.35 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus worldwide while at least 3,544,949 people have died from COVID-19, following an outbreak that started in Wuhan, China, in early December, a Reuters tally showed as of 4:09 pm, on Wednesday, May 19, 2021.

The World Health Organisation referred to it as a pandemic on March 11, 2020.
