More job creation likely thru IT industry, Communications Minister says

KATHMANDU:  Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung has said that as many as 300,000 jobs could be created in the coming three years through the information technology (IT) industries.

Inaugurating the 'Startup and Idea Fest 2024' here today, Minister Gurung said so while expecting support from the private sector for the development of IT industries.

He also pledged policy revision in the first year and budget management and action in the second year.

For this, the government will unveil AI Policy, prepare IT infrastructure and allocate budgets, Minister Gurung elaborated.

Similarly, Minister Gurung committed to developing an IT Park and a Knowledge Park in Kathmandu during his current tenure.

During his remark, the Communications and Information Technology Minister said that the service delivery system of the local government will be made IT-friendly to materialize the theme of Digital Nepal.

On the occasion, Chairman of IT Council Ajit Kuar Sah said the continuity of the government's existing activities in the IT sector could ensure success.

Likewise, Secretary of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Rabindra Dhakal said that the IT sector needs cooperation with industrial enterprises to flourish, thereby retaining the youth population in the country.

Also speaking at the event, former Minister Ganesh Sah said there is an immense chance to make Nepal an IT hub and end the problem of unemployment.

Member of Nepal Chamber of Commerce Pankaj Jalan, Chairman of Living With ICT Rajan Lamsal and other speakers shared their views calling for policy reforms and digital infrastructure development in the country.

The Fest, which has showcased innovative acts of the IT sector, will continue till Friday.
