The beauty, the charm, the elegance of the place that is Sankhuwasabha is privy to not many but to those who get the opportunity to lay eyes upon this land. While previous mentions have described and beheld this very beauty, today we speak of a lesser known fact or rather lesser know animal found in this region: The Yaks!

The yaks are one of the primary livestock reared in the region. Of various colors, sizes and breeds these yaks provide essential loving material namely milk, wool, etc. The bulky, nonchalant yaks of Sankhuwasabha can be found grazing across snow-laden pastures all across the district with their very young shepherds not far behind.

Talking to a fifteen years old Mingma Shangbo, said that, “I take yaks to the field in the morning and leave them there. They eat plants and grass from one field and move to another.”

“We have to go to search for our yaks to bring them back home. Sometimes they go to someone else’s field and eat their vegetables. At that time, we have to pay them for their loss. So we go to check on our animals from time to time”, he adds.

The same scenario is for goats as well. Most of the time, they have to go to the jungle in search of yaks and goats. And it might take them a whole day to search for their animals. At times, they find their yaks and goats dead, killed by tigers. So, it is also risky to leave their animals deep in the jungle.
