The Supreme Court (SC) has demanded a written response from the government on a case involving caste-based discrimination after a landlord denied room in rent due to reasons of caste. The written response is sought via the Office of Attorney General.
A single bench of justice Kumar Regmi issued the order in the name of the government to furnish a written response within 15 days. “It is evident that the discrimination based on caste is inhuman and cruel. Constitution and laws have banned it and made it punishable,” the order read, adding, “Right against discrimination and untouchability are protected by Article 24 of Nepal’s constitution.”
On July 4, Rupa Sunar had filed a writ petition at SC against landlady Saraswati Pradhan from Babarmahal, Kathmandu, arguing that her right to live a dignified life was violated after Pradhan denied a room in rent as she came to know Sunar belonging to Dalit community (Kami).
The court has also summoned both sides for discussion on July 13.
