'Boutique’ a French word for shop means literally means a small store that sells stylish clothing items.
With the number of boutiques growing in Kathmandu and the business booming, what is it like to run a boutique?
Mystique Boutique located at Central Jawagal Chowk, Kupondole, sells bridal lenghas, kurtis, and saris.
Started in December 2018, Mystique Boutique has catered to a lot of customers.
Owned by an enterprising young entrepreneur, Sharon Trisha Fernandes, the boutique is making its mark. She says, “I may not have a degree in business, but I have experience in it.” Before running her own boutique, Fernandes worked at a consultancy, and then worked with ‘Red Velvet’ for two years as a store manager.
She says, “It has been 4 years since I have been in this business, and I have seen it grow. Also the numbers of boutiques have increased over the years.”
Before opening her store, Fernandez went to India and did some research on fabrics and colours. And now she comes up with her own designs as well.
Fernandez says, “Running a boutique is not just about having clothes, it is about the quality, and also about the current trends. I do customized designs as well, if the customers want something extra I give them what they want. This season the trend is blue and mint. And for the bridal collection, brides are looking for a red and silver mix.”
Since it is summers, Fernandez notes light colors are always trendy, and in winters, darker shades are more popular.
But what happens when some people prefer something different?
“We surely try to focus on the trends but in our store, the customers can find items of any colours,” says Fernandez.
She says there is a misconception that boutiques are expensive and some people still do not prefer to shop there. But Fernandez says, “My price range is reasonable and anyone can afford it. Many of my customers who have come here say that they are surprised at how affordable we are. I had a bride who ordered her whole bridal look for her wedding and reception.”
However, prices may also differ due to the fabric used in the designs. She says, “I always have a sample item to show the customers. There is difference in our product and the ones that are found in the market. But if they want something customized which may take months to make, then the prices increase.”
