The Department of Drug Administration has granted conditional permission for the emergency use authorisation of COVID-19 vaccine 'CoronaVac' in Nepal.
The meeting of the drug advisory committee of the department held today authorised the use of (Vero Cell), Inactivated (Corona Vac) vaccine manufactured by Sinovac Life Sciences Co Ltd, Beijing, China.
It has been indicated that the Corona Vac can be used for active immunisation of individuals of 18 years of age and above for the prevention of COVID-19. It has been instructed to conduct safety and effectiveness monitoring to verify the impact while vaccinating people aged 60 years or above.
Prior to this, the country's drug regulatory body has approved four others vaccines for emergency use. The DDA has approved Sputnik V vaccine manufactured in Russia, Oxford- AstraZeneca/Covishield, Sinopharm BBIP-CorV vaccine manufactured by China, Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech, India.
The WHO has so far approved the use of two vaccines in an emergency in Nepal. CoronaVac has been used in Chili, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey and Thailand. The vaccine has a cent per cent positive results wherein vaccinated people did not show COVID-19 symptoms and they did not get serious illness after inoculation, according to international media.
