The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the local government and administration to ensure justice to Tanka Prasad Acharya, 77, a resident of Diktel Rupakot Majhuwagadhi Municipality-1 in Khotang district.
Acharya was boycotted for his disbelief in untouchability and for taking part in a joint feast organised by the Province 1 government as part of its effort to build a society free of untouchability. The event had taken place two years ago.
The NHRC provincial chapter in Khotang has communicated in writing to the District Administration Office and the concerned municipality to ensure that Acharya's rights are respected. The chapter has called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident and action against the guilty, said the NHRC district chapter chief Shyam Babu Kafle.
On Saturday, NHRC Secretary Bed Bhattarai and a high-level team had met the survivor at his home before releasing a statement calling for justice to the Acharya family.
