International Award for Nepali Conservationist

Sonam Tashi Lama, program coordinator of the Red Panda Network, has been awarded the 2022 Whitley Award for her work in conserving red pandas in Nepal. He has trained 100 civil scientists to help restore the Red Panda's habitat. Similarly, Red Panda has contributed to eco-tourism to provide income to the local people.


Lama has been hailed as one of Nepal's conservation heroes for restoring the Red Panda's habitat and training many locals to become civic scientists. This award of 40,000 pounds is believed to contribute to the continuation of the Red Panda Network's mission.

The Red Panda Network is leading the world's longest running monitoring project.

 10 Wild Red Pandas have been successfully GPS-colored and studied. The Red Panda Network is conducting a study by connecting GPS satellite collars to the necks of 10 red pandas in the Panchthar-Ilam-Taplejung area. This is the first time that a satellite caller has been connected for the research of Red Pandas at the initiative of the Department of Forest and Soil Conservation.


The Government of Nepal has formulated a five year action plan (2019-2023) for the conservation of red pandas.

Similarly, 400 hectares of habitat around Kanchenjunga Mountain has been rehabilitated. More than 100 civil scientists have been trained and 100 school students have been assisted in the Red Panda Conservation Scholarship. The red panda is considered endangered. Its numbers are disappearing worldwide.

Red pandas are found in Nepal, Sikkim of India, Myanmar, South China etc. In Nepal, it is found in Langtang National Park, Everest National Park, Kanchenjunga Conservation Area and Makalu Barun National Park.

 Legal status of the species The National Red List of Mammals under the National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1973 classifies it as an endangered species.
