Umakanta Chaudhary has instructed the contractor company and project staff to rehabilitate the Melamchi Drinking Water Project damaged by the floods last July and distribute Melamchi water to the people of Kathmandu Valley by April.

Minister Chaudhary, who reached Melamchi today to inspect the project site, instructed the employees of Chinese contractor Sino Hydro to complete the headworks of Melamchi Drinking Water Project and other physical infrastructure of the project within the stipulated time as per the contract agreement.

The government has entered into an agreement with Sino Hydro to rehabilitate the project and send water to the Kathmandu Valley after severe damage to the Melamchi River on July. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, while addressing the nation on January 21, had expressed his commitment to re-launch the project within this year.

Stating that he is committed to fulfill the responsibility of providing clean and quality drinking water to the Nepali people as per the Article 35 (4) of the Constitution of Nepal, every Nepali citizen has access to clean drinking water and sanitation services as a fundamental right. He expressed his determination to complete the project. He said that he would take on-site observation and evaluate the work progress on a weekly basis until the project is fully operational.

Dozers and excavators have started constructing the access road from today as the road from Melamchi Bazaar to Amwathan, where the headworks are located, was damaged by the flood.
