Nepal on Monday reported record-high 139 COVID-related deaths. With the inclusion of dead body management statistics provided by the COVID-19 Crisis Management Centre (CCMC) and Nepali Army, the nationwide death toll from the viral disease reached 3,859 on Monday, according to the Ministry of Health and population.

Currently, Nepal's fatality rate stands at 1.2 per cent.

In the valley, Kathmandu recorded 37 deaths from COVID-19 while Lalitpur and Bhaktapur registered 13 and four deaths respectively, in the past 24 hours.

Earlier, the MoHP had reported 88 deaths on Sunday.

The coronavirus along with the new variant double mutant known as B.1.167 has been taking the death toll on the health care system of Nepal. This variant is lethal to all age groups causing a higher fatality rate.

Last year, Nepal reported a low fatality of COVID-19 but the new variant has hit the health care system with hospitals facing a shortage of beds and also oxygen. Many patients have lost their lives to this new variant due to a shortage of oxygen supply.

Nepal reported its first death from COVID-19 on May 16 last year.  A 29-year-old woman from Sindhupalchok district had succumbed to the viral disease.
