After Kohli's departure, Patidar and du Plessis step up

Virat Kohli effortlessly chipped Jagadeesha Suchith's opening delivery of the match, which was just short of a leg-stump half-volley, into the hands of Kane Williamson at short midwicket. Williamson snatched a two-run first over from the left-arm fingerspinner in a flash.

Rajat Patidar was promoted by the Royal Challengers. He made everyone sit up and pay notice when he smacked a Bhuvneshwar Kumar legcutter off the front foot over wide long-on for six in the fourth over, after softly pushing the ball into the gaps. Patidar was responsible for 23 of the Royal Challengers' 47 runs in the powerplay.

Umran Malik had been the Sunrisers' enforcer in the middle overs, but Faf du Plessis pounced on him in his first over, hitting him for two fours and a six in a row. If Rahul Tripathi had held on to a difficult chance at midwicket, the second four could have been a wicket.

Kartik Tyagi's added pace appealed to du Plessis, who scored a 34-ball half-century after being on 9 off 13 balls at one point. Mailk and Tyagi combined for 37 runs in their opening two overs. When Patidar pulled Suchith straight to deep midwicket, he fell two short of his fifty.

Maxwell and Karthik make brief appearances

Glenn Maxwell made his presence known with a switch-hit six his second ball off Suchith, and then hammered Malik for four. Maxwell slipped beneath the length and walloped Kumar for six when he just missed his yorker. Maxwell swung for the hills when Tyagi threw one on a similar length, but this time he picked out Aiden Markram in the outfield.

In the 19th over, Dinesh Karthik arrived at the crease, and the Sunrisers' choices for the last over were Malik and Fazalhaq Farooqi, an Afghanistan left-arm seamer making his IPL debut.

Under pressed, Williamson sided with Farooqi, but he eschewed the slower balls in favor of the faster deliveries, which were right up Karthik's alley. If Tripathi had held on to a more straightforward opportunity at deep midwicket, Farooqi could have ended Karthik's innings at 8. Tripathi, on the other hand, allowed the ball to pass through his hands and land on the boundary cushions. In the next three balls, Karthik smashed two more sixes and a four to guarantee the Royal Challengers reached their target.

Beginning

The Sunrisers got off to a bad start, losing both Williamson and Abhishek Sharma to ducks. Abhishek was castled by a slider from Maxwell, while Williamson was run out without facing a ball. The Sunrisers were reduced to 1 for 2 in the first over after the twin punch. In the powerplay, Aiden Markram went 17 for 19 balls, bringing the Sunrisers' total to 39.

Final act

Tripathi demonstrated his versatility by assisting Josh Hazlewood over short fine leg for four runs, scoop-sweeping Shahbaz Ahmed for another four runs in the same location, and launching Mohammed Siraj over extra-cover for six. Wanindu Hasaranga, on the other hand, picked off batter after batter to counteract Tripathi's attacks.

The Sunrisers needed 79 from 26 balls as Tripathi fell to Hazlewood in the 16th over. They were dismissed for 125 runs with four balls remaining in their innings.
