The Russia-Ukraine war may be having a negative impact on Nepal’s tourism industry. The Russian invasion from 24 February, 2022 created several short- and long-term consequences across the world and Nepal’s tourism industry is one of them.

The already badly impacted tourism industry of Nepal due to the COVID pandemic had just begun to see a significant turn of tourists after the lockdown. Not only city tours but also adventure tourism in Nepal opened their gates after the government revised its travel policies. However, the ongoing war between Russia-Ukraine has resulted in the surge of global crude oil and has affected the disruption of international flights.

The war not only has affected the tourism industry all across the globe but the economy as well. According to the data released by Nepal Tours and Travel Association (NTTA), some 4,000 to 5,000 Russians and a good number of Ukrainians had visited Nepal in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Only in 2019, 283 Russians and 103 Ukrainians purchased peak climbing permits through the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). However, due to the war, Nepal’s tourism industry has felt some direct negative impacts.
